Michael worked in the Department of Health and Children for most of his career, subsequently serving as CEO of the East Coast Area Health Board (2000-2003), Regional CEO of the ERHA (2003-2005), CEO of Our Lady’s Hospice (2005-2006) and CEO of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital (2006-2007). 

He was a member of the Steering Group established by the Minister for Health & Children, which oversaw the development of the Prospectus Report on new Organisational Structures and Process for the Health Services (2001).
